What is a Kundli?

A Kundli (also called Janam Kundli, Birth Chart or Natal Chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. It shows the positions of the nine planets (Navagrahas) across the twelve houses of the zodiac as seen from your birth location. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the Kundli is considered the cosmic blueprint of a person's life โ€” revealing personality, strengths, challenges, relationships, career and the timing of major life events.

How is a Kundli Calculated?

A Kundli requires three pieces of information: your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. Using these details, Vedic astrologers calculate the precise positions of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu using the sidereal zodiac system (as opposed to the tropical system used in Western astrology). The difference between Vedic and Western calculations is called the Ayanamsa โ€” currently approximately 24 degrees.

What Does a Kundli Contain?

A complete Kundli contains: the Lagna (Ascendant) which determines your first house and overall life perspective; planetary positions showing which sign and house each planet occupies; the Moon sign (Rashi) which indicates your emotional nature; the Nakshatra (birth star) of the Moon which determines your Vimshottari Dasha periods; twelve houses each governing a different area of life; and aspects (Drishti) showing which planets influence each other.

The Twelve Houses

Each of the twelve houses in a Kundli governs a specific area of life. The first house represents self and personality; the second represents wealth and family; the third represents courage and siblings; the fourth represents home and mother; the fifth represents children and intelligence; the sixth represents health and enemies; the seventh represents marriage and partnerships; the eighth represents transformation and longevity; the ninth represents fortune and dharma; the tenth represents career and reputation; the eleventh represents gains and income; and the twelfth represents spirituality and foreign lands.

North Indian vs South Indian Style

Kundlis are displayed in two main visual formats. The North Indian style uses a diamond-shaped chart where houses are fixed in position and signs rotate. The South Indian style uses a square grid where signs are fixed and houses rotate based on the Lagna. Both formats contain identical information โ€” only the visual presentation differs. Our calculator supports both styles.

Vimshottari Dasha โ€” Timing System

One of the most powerful features of Vedic astrology is the Vimshottari Dasha system โ€” a 120-year planetary period cycle that shows the timing of major life events. Based on the Moon's position in a Nakshatra at birth, each planet rules a specific period of your life. Understanding your current Dasha period helps explain why certain themes dominate your life right now and helps predict when major opportunities and challenges will manifest.

How Accurate is a Kundli?

The accuracy of a Kundli depends primarily on the accuracy of the birth time. Even a few minutes difference can change the Ascendant and house positions. For the most accurate results, use the exact time of birth as recorded at the hospital. The planetary calculations themselves are highly precise โ€” our calculator uses Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical data source used by NASA, for sub-arcsecond accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I generate a Kundli without birth time?
Yes, but with limitations. Without an exact birth time, we use 12:00 PM as default. This means the Ascendant (Lagna) and house positions may be inaccurate, though planetary sign positions will still be correct for most planets (except the Moon which moves about 13 degrees per day).
Q: Is Kundli the same as horoscope?
Not exactly. A Kundli is your specific birth chart calculated from your exact birth details. A horoscope is a general prediction for your Sun sign or Moon sign shared with millions of others. A Kundli is infinitely more personalised and accurate than a generic horoscope.
Q: What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
The main difference is the zodiac system used. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac based on actual star positions, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac based on the seasons. This results in planetary positions that differ by approximately 24 degrees โ€” which is why your Vedic Sun sign may differ from your Western Sun sign.
