What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. "Vimshottari" means 120 in Sanskrit, referring to the complete 120-year cycle. The system divides life into major periods (Mahadashas) ruled by each of the nine planets, with each planet governing a specific number of years: Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7 and Venus 20 years. The starting Mahadasha is determined by the Moon's position in a Nakshatra at birth.

How is Vimshottari Dasha Calculated?

The starting Dasha is determined by the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Each Nakshatra is ruled by a specific planet, and that planet becomes the first Mahadasha lord. The remaining balance of the first Dasha is calculated based on how far the Moon had travelled through that Nakshatra at birth. After the first Dasha completes, the subsequent Dashas follow the fixed sequence: Sun โ†’ Moon โ†’ Mars โ†’ Rahu โ†’ Jupiter โ†’ Saturn โ†’ Mercury โ†’ Ketu โ†’ Venus, and then the cycle repeats.

Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar

Each Mahadasha (major period) is subdivided into Antardashas (sub-periods) of all nine planets in proportion to their years. Each Antardasha is further divided into Pratyantardashas (sub-sub-periods). This three-level system allows for remarkably precise timing of life events. For example, during Jupiter Mahadasha and Saturn Antardasha, themes of both Jupiter (expansion, wisdom) and Saturn (discipline, karma) will be active simultaneously.

Interpreting Dasha Results

The results of each Dasha depend on the strength and placement of that planet in the natal chart.
