What is Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra is a lunar mansion — one of 27 equal segments of the sky through which the Moon travels during its monthly cycle. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac. Your Janma Nakshatra is determined by the position of the Moon at the exact time of your birth.

Why is Nakshatra Important?

In Vedic astrology, the Nakshatra is considered more significant than the Sun sign for understanding personality, destiny and timing of events. It forms the basis of the Vimshottari Dasha system — the most important timing tool in Jyotish.

Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 Padas (quarters) of 3°20' each. The Pada determines the baby name syllables and adds further nuance to the Nakshatra's characteristics. There are 108 Padas in total (27 × 4), corresponding to the 108 beads of a mala.
