What is a Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra (also called birth star or lunar mansion) is one of 27 equal divisions of the sky through which the Moon travels during its monthly orbit around Earth. Each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac. Your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) is determined by the position of the Moon at the exact time of your birth. In Vedic astrology, the Nakshatra is considered even more significant than the Sun sign for understanding personality, destiny and life timing.

Why are Nakshatras Important?

Nakshatras form the foundation of Vedic astrology in several key ways. First, your Janma Nakshatra determines your Vimshottari Dasha — the planetary period system that predicts the timing of major life events. Second, Nakshatras provide deeper personality insights than the 12 zodiac signs alone, since 27 divisions offer much finer nuance. Third, Nakshatras are used for compatibility matching (Nakshatra Milan), muhurta selection, naming ceremonies (Namakarana) and spiritual practices.

The 27 Nakshatras

The 27 Nakshatras in order are: Ashwini (Ketu), Bharani (Venus), Krittika (Sun), Rohini (Moon), Mrigashira (Mars), Ardra (Rahu), Punarvasu (Jupiter), Pushya (Saturn), Ashlesha (Mercury), Magha (Ketu), Purva Phalguni (Venus), Uttara Phalguni (Sun), Hasta (Moon), Chitra (Mars), Swati (Rahu), Vishakha (Jupiter), Anuradha (Saturn), Jyeshtha (Mercury), Mula (Ketu), Purva Ashadha (Venus), Uttara Ashadha (Sun), Shravana (Moon), Dhanishtha (Mars), Shatabhisha (Rahu), Purva Bhadrapada (Jupiter), Uttara Bhadrapada (Saturn) and Revati (Mercury). Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of the nine planets.

Nakshatra Pada

Each Nakshatra is further divided into 4 Padas (quarters) of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. This gives 108 total Padas (27 × 4), corresponding to the 108 beads of a mala. The Pada determines the specific baby name starting syllable and adds additional nuance to the Nakshatra's characteristics. Your Nakshatra Pada is shown in your Kundli alongside the Nakshatra name.

Nakshatra and Baby Names

One of the most practical applications of Nakshatra knowledge is the selection of baby names. In Hindu tradition, a child's name is chosen based on the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Each Nakshatra Pada has specific starting syllables (Aksharas) that are considered auspicious. Names beginning with these syllables are believed to resonate with the child's cosmic energy and bring good fortune throughout life.

Nakshatra Compatibility

Nakshatra compatibility (Tara Milan) is one of the eight compatibility factors used in traditional Vedic matchmaking. The relationship between the bride's and groom's Nakshatras is evaluated to determine compatibility. Certain Nakshatra combinations are considered highly compatible (Mitra, Param Mitra) while others require careful consideration (Vipat, Vadha). However, a single compatibility factor should never be the sole basis for marriage decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is Janma Nakshatra calculated?
The Janma Nakshatra is determined by dividing the Moon's sidereal longitude (0-360 degrees) by 13.33 degrees (360Ãˇ27). The resulting number (0-26) indicates which of the 27 Nakshatras the Moon occupied at birth. The position within that Nakshatra determines the Pada (1-4).
Q: Can two people have the same Nakshatra?
Yes. Since the Moon stays in each Nakshatra for approximately 1 day, anyone born during the same ~24 hour period will share the same Janma Nakshatra. However, the Pada (quarter) and exact degree will differ, and the rest of the birth chart will be unique to each person.
Q: What is the difference between Nakshatra and Rashi?
Rashi refers to one of the 12 zodiac signs (30 degrees each), while Nakshatra refers to one of the 27 lunar mansions (13.33 degrees each). Your Moon Rashi is which zodiac sign the Moon was in at birth, while your Janma Nakshatra is the specific lunar mansion. Each Rashi contains 2.25 Nakshatras.
