What is Kaalsarp Dosha?

Kaalsarp Dosha (also spelled Kaal Sarp Dosh) is a planetary combination in Vedic astrology where all seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn) are hemmed between Rahu (the serpent's head) and Ketu (the serpent's tail). When all planets fall within the 180-degree arc between Rahu and Ketu, the chart is said to have Kaalsarp Dosha. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets representing the lunar nodes — points where the Moon's orbit intersects the Earth's orbital plane.

The 12 Types of Kaalsarp Dosha

There are 12 types of Kaalsarp Dosha based on which house Rahu occupies. Anant Kaalsarp (Rahu in H1), Kulik Kaalsarp (Rahu in H2), Vasuki Kaalsarp (Rahu in H3), Shankhapal Kaalsarp (Rahu in H4), Padma Kaalsarp (Rahu in H5), Mahapadma Kaalsarp (Rahu in H6), Takshak Kaalsarp (Rahu in H7), Karkotak Kaalsarp (Rahu in H8), Shankhnaad Kaalsarp (Rahu in H9), Patak Kaalsarp (Rahu in H10), Vishdhar Kaalsarp (Rahu in H11) and Sheshnag Kaalsarp (Rahu in H12). Each type has different areas of life it affects.

Effects of Kaalsarp Dosha

Kaalsarp Dosha is associated with repeated obstacles, delays in achieving goals, struggles despite hard work, problems in relationships and health issues. It is often linked to past-life karma with serpents or ancestors. However, it is crucial to note that many highly successful and famous people have Kaalsarp Dosha in their charts — including political leaders, business tycoons and celebrities. The dosha creates challenges but also gives intense focus, determination and eventual breakthroughs.

Amrit Kaalsarp Yoga

When all planets are between Ketu and Rahu (the reverse of Kaalsarp), it is called Amrit Kaalsarp or Kaal Amrit Yoga. This is considered auspicious and is associated with name, fame and recognition. It is important to distinguish between the two configurations when analysing a chart.

Remedies for Kaalsarp Dosha

Classical remedies include: performing Kaalsarp Dosha puja at Trimbakeshwar (Nashik) or Kalahasti temple; chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times daily; worshipping Lord Shiva on Mondays; donating silver snake figurines on Nag Panchami; reciting the Rahu mantra Om Raam Rahave Namah and Ketu mantra Om Kem Ketave Namah; and wearing Hessonite (Gomed) for Rahu and Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) for Ketu after consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Kaalsarp Dosha very common?
Kaalsarp Dosha occurs in approximately 15-20% of birth charts. It is not as common as Mangal Dosha but is more talked about due to its dramatic reputation.
Q: Does Kaalsarp Dosha cancel if one planet is outside the Rahu-Ketu axis?
Yes. If even one planet (other than Rahu and Ketu themselves) falls outside the Rahu-Ketu arc, the full Kaalsarp Dosha is not formed. Some partial effects may still be present, but the full dosha requires ALL seven planets to be hemmed between the nodes.
Q: Can Kaalsarp Dosha give positive results?
Yes, definitely. Many great achievers have Kaalsarp Dosha. The intense concentration of planetary energy within one half of the chart can give extraordinary focus and drive. Results depend heavily on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy and the overall chart strength.
